Akron Woman Earns Diploma through Archways

Jayla Reed is the first employee of a McDonald’s franchisee to earn her high school diploma through McDonald’s Archways to Opportunity program. Reed was honored with a graduation ceremony on September 23 at the “Tiretown” McDonald’s located at 1230 Canton Road, Akron, OH 44312.

The Archways to Opportunity program supports eligible employees across the country, in both corporately-owned restaurants and the restaurants of participating franchisees, in pursuing their educational goals, whether it’s earning their high school diploma, pursuing a college degree or learning English through the “English Under the Arches” program.

Reed is a hard-working mother of one who came to work at her McDonald’s restaurant in 2008 as a crew member. After her daughter was born, she began training to become a manager and began work to complete her diploma through the Career Online High School (COHS).

"We, at COHS, strongly believe that every student brings a unique life potential to their family and their job,” said Howard Liebman, Ph.D., Superintendent of Schools, Smart Horizons Career Online Education. “Achieving high school graduation is an important step towards realizing the potential that lies within and COHS is proud to be a partner of McDonald's in helping people achieve these life-changing goals."

Jayla received her diploma in August and has already started her college career on- line with Independence University.

“I am so proud of Jayla and all of her accomplishments. I’m also proud of her co-workers who supported her,” said Carl Blickle, McDonald’s Owner/Operator in northeast Ohio. “I appreciate that McDonald’s has helped my hard-working employees continue their education, and I appreciate that Jayla has already inspired others to follow her example.”

McDonald's promotes workforce education to support the McDonald’s System and ensure success and advancement. McDonald’s is proud to provide tools and world-class training that help people succeed. Archways to Opportunity is not a one-size-fits-all solution, but an overarching education strategy that meets people where they are.
