Moreno Valley Restaurant Employee Earns His Diploma to show his Daughter the Power of Education

Nearly 17,000 people have benefited from the Archways to Opportunity Education Program

Moreno Valley, CA - Alex Guerrero recently took a day off of work to celebrate a major milestone with family, friends, customers and the Mayor of Moreno Valley. After several years of working toward his degree, his high school graduation was held at the Moreno Valley McDonald’s restaurant he manages. Alex has been working at McDonald’s for 10 years now. As McDonald’s was his first job, he worked his way up within the restaurant to the manager position that he holds today. Throughout his time, he trained in three different departments, worked in five restaurants throughout the area and has helped with several restaurant events.    
 
Education has always been important to Alex. Archways to Opportunity allowed him to access a diploma on his schedule. “I got my diploma for my six-year-old daughter to show her it’s better late than never and you can do anything. She has been one of the biggest motivators while I was participating in the education program for 18 months.” Alex is just one of nearly 17,000 people who have benefited from Archways to Opportunity.
 
Alex is the 89th McDonald’s graduate of the Career Online High School. With the help of McDonald’s and his independent franchisee, Tom Mangione, Alex worked full-time and earned his diploma. Now that he received his high school diploma, he is looking to continue his education by studying business management in college and hopes to further his career at McDonald’s.
 
In 2015, McDonald’s launched Archways to Opportunity, a comprehensive education program that provides eligible employees at participating U.S. restaurants an opportunity to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront college tuition assistance, access free education advising services and learn English as a second language. In the first year of the program, the company saw nearly 5,000 restaurant employees enroll to receive the education offerings. Now, in year two, participation in the program has more than doubled with a 238% increase in enrollment. This acceleration signals the clear interest and need for workforce development programs that help people achieve their dreams, no matter where they are on their personal journey.
