McDonald’s CEO to Speak at United Nations Climate Summit
(New York, September 23, 2014) – McDonald’s Corporation today announced that Don Thompson, president and chief executive officer, will speak at the United Nations Climate Summit’s Action Area on Agriculture session. Thompson will share the company’s leadership strategy on sustainable beef. This is the first time that a McDonald’s CEO has been asked to participate at a UN Summit.
“I’m honored that UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon invited McDonald’s to share more about our goal regarding purchasing sustainable beef, and its potential to impact climate change” Thompson said. “We see strong opportunities to collaborate with all stakeholders to support farmers in ways they can be more productive and sustainable.”
During his remarks, Thompson will also cover the impact of collaboration in the Global Roundtable on Sustainable Beef (GRSB) to deliver principles and criteria that are consistent with the principles of Climate-Smart Agriculture. The company launched a sustainable beef pilot project in Canada earlier this month and will invest nearly $2 million to support global field projects on beef sustainability in the future.
In McDonald’s Global CSR and Sustainability Framework released in April, our company committed to supporting sustainable beef production by collaborating to develop global principles and criteria, begin to purchase a portion of our beef from verified sustainable sources in 2016 and to set a 2020 sustainable beef goal. This global goal is expected to impact millions of farms of all sizes.
Additionally at the UN Climate Summit, McDonald’s is demonstrating further leadership by signing the Joint Statement for Agriculture, Food Security and Nutrition and the New York Declaration on Forests. The Declaration lays out high-level goals to address deforestation, promote restoration and will be endorsed by countries, companies, indigenous peoples and civil society organizations.
McDonald’s contribution to The Declaration includes our goals to source 100% of fiber-based packaging from certified or recycled sources, 100% of palm oil from sources verified as supporting sustainable production, our sustainable beef goal, and support of the Amazon Soy Moratorium.
