McDonald’s Highlights Education, Scholarship, and Diversity Programs at Annual USHLI Conference

As one of the most recognized brands in the world, we’re aware of our impact in communities across the country, which is why we’re committed to supporting the people who live in them. Over the past year, we’ve doubled down on our efforts to provide education opportunities for both our Hispanic crew and customers by expanding the Archways to Opportunity program and HACER scholarship fund.

Archways to Opportunity and English Under the Arches

We take great pride in our Archways program, which aims to bring education to our employees no matter where they are on their journey. The program expanded this past year with a $150 million commitment from McDonald’s, increasing access to education to nearly 400,000 U.S. restaurant employees with the opportunity to earn a high school diploma, receive upfront college tuition assistance, access free education advising services and learn English as a second language (English Under the Arches). More than 632 McDonald’s employees graduated from our English Under the Arches program in 2018 alone; it’s a cornerstone of our Archways curriculum. Of the 24,000+ graduates from the overall Archways program, an astounding 2,500 have self-identified as Hispanic.

“We’re committed to building a better McDonald’s, and we’re doing it from the inside out – building a diverse talent pipeline within the company so we can better serve our millions of diverse customers in restaurants around the world.” – McDonald’s President and CEO, Steve Easterbrook

HACER scholarship

Beyond our dedication to our employees, we’re committed to supporting the communities where we do business. That’s why we created the McDonald’s HACER Program in 1985 to grant eligible Hispanic students financial aid so they can achieve their dreams through higher education. We’ve awarded more than 17,800 scholarships worth over $31 million, and announced an expansion to the program just this past year to increase the number of recipients per year from five to 30 students.

We’re proud of the steps we’ve taken so far, and are continuing to engage with this community through partnerships with some of the most influential organizations in the Hispanic community. We are delighted to announce that McDonald’s is a presenting sponsor at the 2019 United States Hispanic Leadership Institute (USHLI) annual conference. During the conference, McDonald’s gave remarks at the Educational Achievement Luncheon to over 3,000 Hispanic college-age students about Archways to Opportunity and the HACER scholarship. Following the luncheon, McDonald’s presented our world-class diversity programs during a panel featuring other major corporations. During both events, the company was proud to share our progress toward a more inclusive workplace and our ongoing commitment to the Hispanic community.

We can’t wait to show you what’s next on our journey for a more diverse company. For more information on our Diversity and Inclusion efforts, click here.
